The Neighborhood

Union Square

Union Square in Somerville is the commercial center of a residential neighborhood in the southeastern part of the city. The true “square” is located at the intersection of Washington Street, Webster Avenue and Somerville Avenue. The square was used as a Union recruitment and mustering site in the Civil War, thus giving it the name “Union” Square. Today, Union Square is home to many popular restaurants, bars and cafés. The neighborhood is currently served by MBTA bus lines, but construction will begin shortly on the Green Line expansion, which will connect Union Square and greater Somerville to downtown Boston.
