A Little Bit of History

Boston’s Back Bay is aptly named as it was once a bay separating Boston and Cambridge. Overcrowding in the city led to the decision to fill in the bay, which at low tide was marshland. Building the neighborhood, which involved constructing the Charles River Dam and filling in the land between the Public Garden and Kenmore Square, took about 25 years and was completed in 1882. The Back Bay quickly became a center for arts and culture. Some of the first major attractions included the Boston Public Library’s first branch, the original Museum of Fine Arts, the original MIT campus, and Symphony Hall. The cultural importance of Back Bay led to the neighborhood being added to the National Registry of Historic Places in 1973.

Life in The Back Bay

The Back Bay is a neighborhood of history and legacy. Since its establishment, it has been regarded as a neighborhood for the elite. This remains to be the case as the neighborhood offers quick access to some of the city’s best shopping and luxurious apartments, all while being surrounded by ornate, historic buildings. While it may be a historic neighborhood, it’s not absent of modern amenities. In Back Bay, you can still find a variety of boutique fitness facilities, beauty salons, fast-casual dining, bars, fine dining, shopping, theaters, museums, comedy clubs, and more. There are also a variety of grocery shopping options for residents—including Trader Joe’s, Star Market, and more niche options like Eataly for Italian grocery goods.

As essentially the center of the Greater Boston area, Back Bay is a highly-accessible neighborhood, with stops on the Green, Orange, and Commuter Rail lines. Whether you work downtown, in Cambridge, Somerville, or on any of the outskirts of the Green Line branches, living in The Back Bay can easily mean a commute of under 20 minutes. The Back Bay MBTA stop is also a major transportation hub for Amtrack trains and long-distance bus rides to get you to your weekend destination with ease.

Going for a walk through some of Back Bay’s main roads is a regular activity for tourists. Living in this neighborhood means that Newbury and Boylston Streets are essentially your backyard. Living among some of Boston’s biggest attractions is certainly one of the perks of this neighborhood. But if greener spaces are what you’re looking for, the Esplanade along the Charles River is a perfect place to spend the day walking, picnicking, kayaking, biking, or maybe even attending any of the multitude of community events hosted along the river.

Where To Live

Variety is the name of the game with housing in Back Bay. If you’re looking for a quintessential Boston brownstone, this is one of the best neighborhoods to find them. There aren’t many single-family homes in this neighborhood, so most of the housing options are apartments or condos. On the main thoroughfares, there are lots of apartment options with retail on the first floor, which is a good option for residents looking to live as close as possible to city amenities. There are also plenty of new high-rise buildings with amenities such as doormen, gyms, common spaces, and even Amazon hubs. Residents in The Back Bay range from college students to young families to long-established Boston residents. Much of the housing stock in Back Bay comes at some of the highest price tags in the city.

Advice For Back Bay Buyers

“The Back Bay may be the most exclusive neighborhood in the city of Boston. It’s rich tradition and elegant architecture make the neighborhood very desirable for buyers. While single-family homes are becoming hard to come by, newer high rises are popping up offering living spaces with modern luxuries. If you’re looking for a more traditionally elegant look, there is still plenty available in Back Bay, often in the form of multi-family brownstones.

While the prices in Back Bay might be higher than other areas in Boston, buyers and renters are paying for convenience. From having the best shopping and dining at your fingertips to having quick access to nearly any other neighborhood in the city, Back Bay is a location that’s hard to beat.”
