Having always been an early riser, I prefer a good diner for breakfast over a fine restaurant for dinner. I am certainly not disappointed with the options available in my hometown of Watertown, MA. There are three standouts that my wife and I keep coming back to again and again. Some of them are also within walking distance from home for us, and with the portions served at these diners, it’s best to get a good walk in afterward. All are open for breakfast and lunch from 7:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and serve breakfast all day on the weekends.
UNCOMMON GROUNDS - NOT JUST FOR COFFEE

Although the name of this one may bring you in for coffee, and it should with a good selection of flavored coffees and teas as well as espressos, cappuccinos, and lattes, the food menu will keep you coming back. My favorite is the Linguiça Egg Sandwich, a hefty helping that requires two hands to hold. Ask your waiter to have the chef slice it in half for easier eating. There is a good selection of gluten-free or low-gluten options on this extensive menu. There is outdoor seating during the nicer weather along with rare off-street parking. The restaurant is on the 71 bus line between Watertown Square and Harvard Square, making it accessible to more than just Watertown residents.
THE Diner AT 11 NORTH BEACON - BREAKFAST IS GREAT AND LUNCH IS EVEN BETTER

This diner is a downtown favorite for a simple omelette and home fries but the full menu continues to draw me in. Street parking in front can be limited but as it’s just a block from Watertown Square, many patrons walk from a nearby business to enjoy the authentic diner atmosphere. On the nicer days, there are a few tables in the rear for outdoor dining as well.
TRESCA’S EATING PLACE - COME EARLY AND HUNGRY

Tresca’s is located within the municipal parking lot in Watertown Square, making it an easy spot for pedestrians or drivers. They serve breakfast all day every day and open early at 6:00 a.m. and close a bit later than most at 3:00 p.m. This place has great prices and huge portions but be warned: it’s cash only. There is an ATM on site and several bank ATMs within a block so you can easily get cash if you forget. Anything with their Scali toast is my favorite choice, whether it’s with eggs for breakfast or an oversized sandwich at lunch. There is plenty of counter seating for single diners along with super comfortable booths for larger parties.
